SW3: Semi Final: Dunbar Rovers V Coogee United

Dunbar Rovers 1 Coogee United 0

As you may be aware our SW1 team played their Semi Final last night and unfortunately were beaten 1-0.

It took probably the best headed Female goal that I've ever seen from a corner. We were very unlucky not to have scored an equalizer but for another fine header hitting the crossbar! Coogee had dominated the match and held possession well.

We were by far the better team with Dunbar opting for the direct route ala Wimbledon welly, very unattractive Soccer... Our girls should all be very proud of themselves as they are a well drilled unit. Some of the exchange play would make some of our Men's team look up and applaud.

I was once again very impressed with the team and can predict some silverware in the future. Great season Girls, I'm very proud of you... WELL DONE! See you at the preso night...

    SW3: Queens Park

Queens Park 3 Coogee Utd 2

Let me start by saying that I was very disappointed that we only had 10 players turn up for the game and we had to play against 16 enthusiastic opponents.

The girls went down 2-0 at half time but were battling a strong wind.

In the second half, Michelle scored a couple of cracking goals to level the game. Queens Pk threw everything at us but we held out for 80 minutes until a loose ball and run found the back of the net and QP were up 3-2.

To the girls credit they continued to battle and could have equallised when a cross found Nads who volleyed the ball slightly wide of the net.

To the 10 players that turned up:
Well done on the mighty effort you put in for the full 90 minutes. You all should be very proud of the result and the manner in which you played the game. With more than 11 players, I know we could have been a real force this season.

    Sunday 29/07/07
    SW1: Heffron Park

Coogee United 2 Dunbar Rovers 0
    (Michelle Greenbrook 2)

Coogee camels were fortunate enough to be fielding a fuller strength side than previous weeks have seen, and were fired up and ready to have another crack at victory over the undefeated league leaders. The Camels have held firm belief all season they can more than match the talented Dunbar side and were keen to send a message to the SW1 league that they pose a serious challenge in the end of season finals.

Coogee started the match in their usual stuttering form, and took a good 20 minutes to get into the game, struggling to keep possession and build an attack. Early pressure from the Dunbar resulted in a number of early corners to test the Coogee defence and a number of runs onto goal.

The camels defended strongly however and subdued the Dunbar attack, eventually finding some possession and creating good link up play from defence to midfield. The Dunbar goal began to experience pressure and the Camels were quick to find their attacking form, testing the goalkeeper and defence.

The Camel's work finally paid off with a corner ball dancing in front of goal, happily banged in by the waiting feet of Michelle "Tickets" Greenbrook - keen to impress her sideline cheer squad... and anyone else passing by. 1-0 Coogee - first time leading Dunbar... game on moles.

The camels regained composure at restart, keen to maintain the upper hand, and worked strongly in all areas, challenging well and defending strongly. Bridget and Dani covered ground at great speed to continually frustrate the Dunbar attack, and "Can't wait" Kate got in early (tee hee) with some strong interceptions and winning headers.

Dunbar challenged strongly to get back into the game, conceding a free kick in the Coogee half and losing a player to the strong challenge. Momentarily down to 10 players, Coogee saw their chance and "Builder" Bridge struck a fine free kick toward the penalty spot and the waiting Goal poacher Michelle "I'm on Fire" Greenbrook, who cut in front of the waiting goal keeper to finish with a glorious goal to make it 2-0 before half time.

The second half began with Coogee fully aware that they still had much work to do, and Dunbar applied pressure throughout, but all Coogee players worked hard for each other, and put in a strong team performance to soak up the Dunbar challenge.

Nerves seemed to get the better of the Camels during a late fifteen minute spell and Dunbar looked to be fighting back into the game, but never got through for a clear opportunity on the Coogee goal, thanks to a sterling effort from the Coogee back line and midfield.

No further goals made for a 2-0 Coogee victory at the final whistle and a Jubilant bunch of camels leaving the field, finally having realised their potential as a strong winning unit with many improvements still to come. Game on moles.

    Sunday 03/06/07
    SW1: Coral Sea Park

    Maroubra 2 Coogee United 3
(Tanya Cuda 1, Sarah Galvin 2)

Coogee were without their coach as they travelled to Coral Sea Park for the season's second meeting with Maroubra, and Michelle was still without her shirt, but the camels were still keen to prove they could get the job done.

The team arrived earlier than usual to prepare for the match, but sadly spent the opening ten minutes of the game fast asleep, and were punished by a fiery start from Maroubra who scored in the early minutes of the game. 1-0.

The camels struggled to gain possession and Maroubra continued with their domination in attack, but the camels - slowly waking up - soon managed one of their own, getting the ball through to Speedy Sarah Galvin in the box where she was swiftly brought down. The ref pointed to the spot and she cooly put away a Coogee equaliser. 1-1.

The Coogee defence was soon under attack again however and dangerously exposed down the left and right sides with Maroubra creating a number of chances on goal. When in possession in attack Coogee remained strong though, and Speedy Galvin caused problems again, taking a great touch to the left of goal and cutting inside for a superb right foot finish in the Maroubra net. 1-2 Coogee, starting to gain control.

A small tickle in the ribs while defending a corner down the other end however, and Coogee felt the sting of the referee's whistle. Penalty given - For an infringement in some imaginary rulebook one can only presume. 2-2.

The Camels, frustrated at the injustice, fired up and started to play better football, with Mrs Buchan flying up and down the wing causing all sorts of problems for the Maroubra defence. Coogee kept pressure on, winning a number of corners, and a goalmouth scramble fell happily at the feet of TC Top Cat Cuda, who popped away a Coogee third. 2-3 Coogee, thankful to regain the lead.

Half time saw an encouraging talk from stand-in coach B.C, and encouraging sweet-talk from Michelle 'tickets' Greenbrook to the referee (making sure he knew what day it was...).

The second half saw no further goals but the Camels stepped up and put in a stronger defensive performance to keep an aggressive Maroubra attack at bay. Coogee went a Mole down as Cuda pulled a muscle and had to be sidelined but Mrs Buchan ran her socks off in defence and attack, and Coogee began to create a number of chances, forcing the keeper to make a number of saves.

In defence Apple finally fell to the persistent challenges of a Maroubra striker, and unfortunately left the ground in an ambulance, but at least she didn't leave on the Loser's bus that left the ground with the home team on board. Game on Moles.

Not a great Coogee performance, but a deserved three points in the bag. Final Score 2-3 Coogee.

    Sunday 27/05/07
    SW1: Jellicoe Park

    Pagewood 0 Coogee United 3
(Tanya Cuda 1, Maree Mitchell 1, Bridget McCloskey 1)

In the wee hours of Sunday morning, the Camels gathered at Jellicoe Park for the second time this season - still no sign of Yogi-Bear or Booboo. Mrs Buchan was true to form, wrong pitch again but she is getting closer to hitting the right pitch on the first attempt. The Camels came together for an intense warm-up which saw the consumption of a new performance enhancing drink (peppermint tea) and a stretching regime similar to the one most people use when they get out of bed – arms up and yawn.

It was no surprise that the game kicked off at a lacklustre pace with most of the Camels taking the minimalist approach in the early part off the game. The Camels still dominated possession in the early part of the game with some occasional periods of cohesive passing. About midway through the first half, Cuda latched onto a precision pass and headed for goal. With two players to beat, Cuda dazzled them with footwork before checking to the left, shooting across the face of goal to score in the bottom right corner. 1-nil Coogee.

For the rest of the first half, the Camels hit the snooze button. Pagewood took advantage of their increased possession and began to mount some meaningful attack on the Camel's goal. Pagewood's persistence paid off when they were awarded a dubious penalty. With Builder Bridge in goal, jumping around like a monkey on 'E', the Pagewood spot kicker sent the ball flying over the bar and half way to Maroubra. Justice - one might say and many wearing black and white did!

After a few blunt yet truthful words from Al, the Camel's returned to the pitch for the second half with a bit more urgency. Pagewood continued to press forward and their unstructured approach made life difficult for the Camel's to clear out of defence. After a few close calls including a couple of great saves from Dani and a goal clearance from Crouchy Greenbrook, the Camel's finally began to gain some possession. Coogee earned a free kick just inside the Pagewood half and inches from the side line. The Pagewood keeper had seen 3 or 4 pathetic Camel free kicks in the first half and clearly didn't expect a Camel to shoot on target. Builder Bridge - One year older and clearly wiser, hit the shot on target and the ball bounced past the keeper for the second goal. 2-nil Coogee.

The goal totally deflated Pagewood and the Camel's were able to gain longer periods of possession. There were a number of raids on the Pagewood goal, with Sarah very unlucky to have a great individual effort hit the post. Evelyn found herself with more room to move as well and Mrs Buchan causing havoc all over the pitch. A third goal came with a brilliant cross from the left by Cuda, which found Mrs Buchan waiting in the area. Taking a touch, Mrs Buchan buried the ball into the back of the Pagewood net to take the score line to 3-nil.

Not the most inspirational game the Camels have played but an important win all the same.

    SW1: Dave Phillips South

    UNSW 0 Coogee Utd 7
Tanya Cuda (3), Michelle Greenbrook (2), Maree Mitchell (1), Bridget McCloskey (1)

With three consecutive wins on their back, Coogee began their game against the uni students, keen to add a fourth to the victory tally.

The Camels wasted no time finding their stride and taking early control of the game, with the Uni struggling to put a foot on the ball from kick off. Early pressure on goal from the confident Camels, started the party with a bang as Young Brenda found Crouchy 'Tickets' Greenbrook with space to the right of goal, finishing superbly with a right foot shot into the roof of the net. 1-0 Coogee, quickest goal of the season thus far.

Uni restarted, but had little opportunity to play the ball, with the Coogee defence remaining tight and forcing out any attempts at attack. The Camels retained the vast majority of possession, passing and moving with confidence and frustrating the students at every turn.

With the Uni goal under constant attack, Coogee soon added a second goal to the tally as Top Cat Cuda prowled into the box, firing in a second. 2-0 Coogee, and the cat just warming up...

All going well for the Camels, apparently having extreme fun in the sun, until Tangent Dorckzak, legs working harder than lips, pulled up with an ankle niggle leaving the Camels substitute less and of course, Dorckless.

The Coogee attack continued however, with some strong running down the left from Mrs Buchan and some great deliveries from Captain McKie's boot on the right, keeping the Uni on the backfoot and forcing a number of corners. The Camel's persistence again paying off with a second notch on the Top Cat tally, with Cuda bagging another great finish. 3-0 going into half time, and the Camels on an all time high.

Coach Al struggled to criticise at half time, very encouraged by his team's performance, and asking only for more of the above.

The Camels hit the second half keen to deliver and the Uni again struggled to make an impact on the game. Miss 'Tickets', now with a taste for goal as well developed as her taste for a cheeky turn and back flick, opened the second half scoring in the same fashion as she opened the first, and Coogee were striding ahead with four.

The Uni came forward with some possession in spurts, but proved little trouble for the Coogee defence, with the only shot on goal again coming from yet another Comedy Keeper deflection, keen to score a birthday goal... Brief scare avoided, Mrs Buchan placed the focus back where it should be and finished off a ball worked out of defence and straight onto the uni goal, placing the Camels a cool five in front.

Limpy Dorcky raced courageously back on the field to join the party and the solid 'Builder' Bridge, with more energy apparently than a Duracell Bunny, charged up into midfield, keen to join the goal party. She had to wait a short while, as strong link up play down the left from Fritz, and Sharon 'Olly' Oleskevich, set King Crosser McKie up for an inch perfect right foot ball across goal for the waiting Top Cat in the Hat-trick Cuda for her third finish of the day. 6-0. Oh yes.

Keen to finish on a lucky seven, and to add a header to the goal tally, 'Builder' Bridge finally joined the goal party to bring the match to a close, and let the celebrations begin.

The Camels are still aware of work to do and improvements to be made, but with growing confidence and encouraging team work, the best we feel is yet to come...

Lots more goals - Game on Moles.

    Sunday 29/04/07
    SW1: Jellicoe Park
Pagewood 0 vs Coogee Utd 5 (Tanya Cuda 2, Kahrina Dorczak 2, Own Goal)

Coogee returned to the ground of the angry dog walkers to encounter Pagewood for the first time this season, keen to add a third consecutive win to their tally. Tanya Dorczak being especially keen, turned up early – for a two o' clock kick off - and just in time for the actual one. Go Talky.

Unfortunately, the match got started long before Coogee did and the first half saw the camels less than fired up and struggling to string two passes together. Pagewood held most of the possession and attacking play and put some early pressure on the Coogee defence, but were kept at bay by good cover from Bridge, Fritz, and Dani.

Coogee struggled to gain possession or control of the game, with scrappy play from both sides causing frustration all round. When Coogee finally woke up for a spell, Pagewood were caught napping, and a 'Builder' Bridge free kick deep in the Coogee half found TC - Top Cat - Cuda up front who charged on goal, and blasted a right footer at the keeper who fumbled it into the net. 1-0 Coogee. Sweet.

Pagewood were stunned into silence (even the coach...) and a few Coogee corners later, Captain Leish unleashed (oh yes) her usual world class corner ball to be met with a world class finish from an unfortunate Red-shirted, Red-faced defender. 2-0 Coogee o/g.

Pagewood continued to pressure the Coogee defence however, and the game was far from over. The camels, despite struggling to find last week's early form, still managed to create more scoring opportunities than the opposition, with Cuda and Dorcky Junior both testing the keeper one on one, and Maree's "Fresh from Pole Dancing" Legs firing in a follow up shot saved on the line by a Pagewood body.

    Half time 2-0

Despite the positive two goal lead, a very negative first half performance from the Camels, which unfortunately saw the loss of Mrs Galvin-Mahoney to a pain in the neck (which wasn't her husband...).

A few choice words and a wake up call from the husband at half time, saw the camels snap out of their first half doze and actually bring some 'Game on Moles' action to the proceedings. Pagewood, bowing under new pressure, conceded an early free kick outside the area, expertly laid off by Crouchy Greenbrook (still visibly saddenend by the recent loss of Jomi - RIP) to the waiting Dorcky Junior who wowed the travelling Away supporters with a killer shot over the keepers head and into the net. 3-0 and a contender of goal of the season.

Not content with one, Rina Dazzler soon struck again with a follow up on a cheeky Greenbrook attempt to lob the keeper, to tap in a second and reduce the Pagewood defence to head in hands. Coogee's play was much improved, with some great passing moves and spread of play. A superb three way link up brought the fifth and final goal with young Brenda picking the ball up in midfield, finding Cuda who played out wide to Rina and ran on to pick up the return pass and finish with her second goal. 5-0.

Pagewood pushed on in the final stages, but the Camels proved too tough to penetrate, despite the apparent lack of an offside rule... great defensive work from all, Bridget on 'Fire', and young Brenda dropping back to make some crucial clearances.

A strong second half from Coogee, and convincing win. Final Score 5-0. We are scoring!!!

    Sunday 22/04/07
    SW1: Heffron Park
Coogee Utd 3 (Tanya Cuda, Sarah Galvin, Maree Mitchell)
    Maroubra Utd 0

Hot from a 7-0 drumming of Queens Park last week, the camels arrived at Heffron at the right time, in the right frame of mind - at the wrong pitch. Coach Al thankfully swung into action and in a flurry of nets, flagpoles, and upturned wheely bins, a smaller, somewhat scruffier pitch was prepared for action.

Maroubra kicked off with ten players, (Coogee with ten plus Michelle 'Crouchy' Greenbrook) and were outdone in every aspect of first half play. Coogee held majority of possession with some good passing, TALKING (not just Dorcky...), and early pressure on goal. Hard work paid off with a build up from the back resulting in a cheeky midfield back flick from Crouchy 'Crowd pleaser' Greenbrook (who else), setting up a pass through to Tania 'Eat my Dust' Cuda who fired through with a precision shot on goal. 1-0. Game on Maroubra Moles...

Maroubra barely gained possession as Coogee kept the pressure on at restart, and soon hit again with Mrs Buchan's 'Hot from Honeymoon' legs doing the business, with a swift one-two with the post and in for the second.

Maroubra finally hit back with what was almost a run on goal, but the solid 'Builder' Bridge had it covered with a defensive back pass. Unfortunately, feeling somewhat left out of action at this point, Elaine 'KickingKid' Wilson, attempted to attract some attention to her lonely goal by sending Bridges' pass at an acute backward angle toward it... Fully in control, and fully cleared at second (phew) attempt.

In recognition of Maroubra's unfortunate 10 man showing, and in an honourable display of rich tea and sympathy, Coach Al implemented a five man substitution at this stage of play, simply because - 'he could'. A gesture not unappreciated by the Maroubra coach, it seemed.

Ten fresh legs into the action and Coogee soon struck again, with Mrs Sarah Galvin-Mahoney taking the ball through on right side of the box, and grabbing a much deserved goal. Coogee 3 Maroubra 0.

Second half saw a fired up Maroubra leading a few more attacks and getting a bit (oo-er) Physical, and making a dent on Coogee's first half dominance. In a bid to embrace this display of physicality Crouchy Greenbrook held on closely to her marker for comfort, but unfortunately caught the attention of a jealous referee, continually blowing up to untangle the two. Thankfully the Greenbrook charm swung into action and the ref was soon won over with her cheeky London banter.

Maroubra failed to make any mark on the scoreline with the Coogee defence continually keeping them at bay, despite a number of falls and squealing protests.

Final score 3-0. Great contribution from all. A sign of the Coogee dominance to come...

    Queens Park 0

On an early Sunday morning Coogee Camels found their first win of the season. The sun was shinning and the girls were in all pumped and raring for the whistle, we started off brightly but found few chances in the early minutes of the game as Queens Park played a very defensive and pressing gameplan, Coogee kept their composure and were rewarded, when Tanya Cuda tapped in a rebound from a Fiona piledriver. 1-0 Coogee.

A few minutes later Coogee were 2-0 up when another well timed run saw Cuda tap in for her second of the game and third of the season. Michelle then hit a 30yrd thundershot that rattled the crossbar and Queens Park defense. The 3rd goal was soon on it way and it came from the right foot of the impressive Fiona. Michelle played a side pass ball, that Fiona placed into the bottom right corner from outside the area, 3-0. Bridget hit the post twice with a well timed header from a Elisha corner..

    Halftime 3-0

In the second half we again started off fast and took a 4-0 lead when Michelle headed into the net with the keeper about to punch the ball.

Coogee's 5th goal was the best of them all as a two touch move involving Michelle, Sarah, Cuda and Maree saw Rina score with a well timed run and finish 5-0

Our 6th goal came from a corner as another brilliant ball in from Elisha (she had crossed about 8 perfect corners all game) saw Bridget again rise and head the ball, this time the keeper and posts were not able to stop it hit hitting the net, 6-0 and Coogee were flying. Coogee's 7th goal was a cracking effort from Rina that flew into the top hand corner with the keeper not even moving... 7-0.

Coogee were in top gear and other shots from Sarah and Lisa and Maree saw the keeper make fine saves... the final whistle went and Coogee came off to cheers from the small crowd of fans......
