    AA6: Season Summary

    Season summary so far:

AA6 already in a season of ups and downs and highs and lows. The team needs to find that elusive consistency to make a real challenge for the league.

Season highlight was the Steve Cole's first goal for the mighty Coogee, he has put it in his football career scrapbook next to the other one...

But it's a long season, the boys will put it in, and as I always say, "at the end of the day, it gets dark".

    Over 35a: Coogee Utd v Barnstoneworth - May 10, 2009

We made heavy weather of this game finally winning 4-3 after trailing 1-3 but it was a rousing comeback inspired by James McGlone. Our goalie Adam and regular back up Frank were away and we'd conceded a couple of soft goals. The usually reliable Anthony had misjudged a floater in the first half as we fell one goal behind. Lui played in goal for the second half and he dropped an easier one under pressure from a few big Barnstoneworth lads and we were suddenly looking down the barrel despite being the better team.

We were looking into the setting sun in the second half and it was difficult to see much but as the sun went below some low clouds our form reversed. James is a Celtic fan and having suffered through a 1-0 loss to Rangers the night before he was now looking at a loss to a cranky team full of Rangers fans. After a bit of build up I slung in a dipping cross to the far post and James, charging up from the back, flung himself at the ball, sending it low inside the left hand post and we were back in it.

A couple of minutes later I aimed a corner at Anthony towards the back post. It was just beyond him but James got to it, forcing himself between two defenders, and it rocketed in for 3 all. After that, it seemed just a matter of time and Marco set up Anthony nicely for a shot which was handled on the line. Marco converted the penalty for the win.

Earlier, Maldini had put Ollie through for two good chances. After blasting the first one over the bar while trying to burst the net, Ollie converted the second with a calm flick over the advancing 'keeper for the opening goal.

We all played pretty well but James was the spark, driven by passion and the desire for retribution. We'll be hearing about those goals for a while yet...
